MacBook Air with leopard on screen

Leopard on the loose! Launched in 2008, the MacBook Air is one very sleek machine with a form factor so thin it got everyone talking at the time (including Lenovo with their spoof ad) and even the entry level model packed 80GB of drive space, full size keyboard and widescreen plus the mighty OS X Leopard into its elegant slimline case. Significantly more portable than most laptops and packed with both WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity, it offers far more power and usability than the smaller netbooks. In the time that has passed since the MacBook Air's launch, the various specification machines have proved themselves to be capable, popular and stylish computers for business and creative productivity on the move. New and second user machines can be found via online stores and internet auction sites and a whole industry has grown up to offer accessories for Apple products. Features & Spec Review : Inside the case

In use the machine proves to be quite a dream. Boot-up and shut-down take seconds and the MacBook Air, like most Macs, is a breath of fresh air for some PC users with its stability and integration with other Apple products - both hardware and software. The lid held up relatively well to a fairly strong sea wind in our outdoor test. It was grabbed a few times but was no less resilient than any other modern notebook. Bluetooth and wireless connections are a breeze and we had a few of our favourite 3rd party free programs installed within minutes of connecting to the internet. Style-wise it's a machine you don't have to be ashamed to cart around and the keyboard and screen are user-friendly enough to mean that you won't be heading for the desktop as soon as you touch base. It's not just a great machine when you're on the move but it can also replace the desktop for most of those everyday tasks, web surfing and communications. It's ideally suited to the business or creative type who is out on the move and needs a spacesaving multimedia and wireless capable notebook that is suitable for everyday use as a desktop alternative.

Plus points: Powerful and slimline computing for the discerning computer buyer. It comes in a very stylish package, is lightweight and thin but with enough power to handle industry standard business applications and creative packages. Battery power, solid-state storage option and advanced wireless connectivity all score high on the tech spec. sheet.

Downsides : a single USB port and lack of optical drive may be an issue for some users. Programs may be loaded via 'Remote Disc' on another Mac or PC. Price point is relatively high. Some reports of cooling issues. Recharge time can take a while.
